Russian President Vladimir Putin took a swipe at the Group of Seven on Friday, contrasting its declining share of the global economy with BRICS’ growing economic weight.

Addressing the BRICS Business Summit 2026 in New Delhi, Putin said G7 countries accounted for about 18% of global economic output, compared with nearly 40% for BRICS members.

“I don’t know why they call them that,” Putin remarked, questioning the grouping’s continued relevance.

Russia was a member of what was then the G8 until it was expelled following its annexation of Crimea in 2014. The grouping subsequently reverted to the G7.

Putin described BRICS as the world’s largest economic bloc and said its members were gaining strength and influence as the global order changed.

Highlighting India’s growing contribution to the global economy, Putin said the world was undergoing a major economic shift. He added that BRICS remained open to cooperation with countries outside the grouping.

The Russian president also accused Western countries of trying to weaken Russia through what he called unfair sanctions.

He said Russia had maintained its economic performance despite the restrictions and stressed the need for greater cooperation among BRICS members as the global economic order evolves.

Don't know why they call them that: Putin's swipe at G7 economies at BRICS meeting

The Delhi high court on Wednesday listed a petition seeking directions to hospitalise activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on a hunger strike for 17 days, and force-feed him, for hearing on Thursday. It sought the presence of the law officers from the Union and Delhi governments for the hearing.

Wangchuk’s strike is part of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)’s protest demanding Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation over the alleged irregularities in the examination system.

The court noted the urgency of the matter while listing it for hearing. “Heard the petitioner who appears in person. Having regard to the urgency, list/put up tomorrow [Thursday]. Let a copy of this order be served upon the additional solicitor general (ASG) and the standing counsel representing the Delhi government (civil),” said a bench of Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia.

Advocate Rakesh Kumar Saini moved the court, saying that Wangchuk’s health has deteriorated significantly and he has lost 8.5 kg. He said his life could be at risk within the next two days if the fast continues. “If he passes away, it would be a matter of great shame for the country and the world,” Saini’s plea said.

The petition said that no government official had engaged with the protesters over the past 20 days to discuss their demands and that Wangchuk has been on a hunger strike since June 28. The plea alleged that the government was treating him “like a hardcore criminal, terrorist or traitor to the nation” and displayed a lack of empathy.

Opposition leaders and over 1,800 members of civil society, including academics, artists and activists such as Naseeruddin Shah, Ratna Pathak Shah, Arundhati Roy, Nivedita Menon, Jean Drèze, Lalita Ramdas and Kavita Srivastava, wrote a letter on Tuesday, urging Wangchuk to end his hunger strike.

“His life is invaluable to the entire world because it embodies a commitment to humanity and the environment that is as profound as his commitment to democracy,” Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav said in a post on X.

The CJP has been protesting at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar since June 20. It emerged amid controversy surrounding remarks attributed to Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant during a hearing on conferring the “senior” designation on lawyers. The CJI allegedly referred to “youngsters” as “cockroaches” and “parasites”. He later clarified that he had been misquoted and that the remarks were directed at individuals entering the legal profession with “fake and bogus degrees”.

Tamil Nadu CM Vijay takes oath as MLA at Chennai Secretariat

In a fast-escalating political flashpoint ahead of the April 9 polls, a joint team of Assam Police and Delhi Police knocked on the doors of Congress leader Pawan Khera's home on Tuesday, a day after an FIR was filed against him by the wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

A four-member Assam Police team, who were informed in advance, arrived at Khera’s Nizamuddin residence for questioning. Delhi Police assisted with the operation. Khera was not at home, and the team remained at the residence awaiting his return for questioning.

According to sources, some "incriminating material" was recovered during a search. Meanwhile, with Khera AWOL, Himanta Sarma jibed that the Congress leader had "fled to Hyderabad".

Congress was immediately up in arms. Reacting to the development on X, Karnataka Minister Karti Chidambaram likened the Assam Police to a "private militia".

Jairam Ramesh, the party communications in-charge, came out in support of Khera, labelling the police action against him a witch-hunt and slamming Himanta Sarma as a "bully".

"The deployment of a full army of police officials to arrest my colleague Pawan Khera for asking basic questions in the public interest proves that the Assam CM is disturbed, desperate, and rattled," he wrote.

The police action follows Khera’s press conference where he alleged that Riniki Bhuyan Sharma held three foreign passports, from UAE, Egypt and Antigua and Barbuda, and owned properties in Dubai along with assets linked to companies in Wyoming.

“According to Indian law, you cannot hold dual citizenship, so does Riniki Bhuyan Sharma also hold an Indian passport?” Khera asked.

He also questioned, “Is Himanta Biswa Sarma the adopted son of Amit Shah? And did the country’s Home Minister know that his adopted son’s wife holds three passports?”

FIR, LEGAL WARNING AND PAKISTAN LINK CLAIM
Responding sharply, Himanta Biswa Sarma said his wife had filed an FIR and warned of serious legal consequences.

“When you raise an issue with fraudulent documents, it attracts 420 and 468. When used to influence an election, the punishment is life imprisonment,” he said.

He alleged that the Congress material was sourced externally.

“During our research, we found that the entire material of the press conference was supplied by a Pakistani social media group.”

“In the last 10 days, Pakistan channel has done at least 11 talk shows on Assam elections Pakistan’s link has become very apparent,” he added.

RINIKI BHUYAN SHARMA: ‘HOW CAN I HAVE THREE PASSPORTS?’
In an interaction, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma firmly denied the allegations.

When asked if she has a dual passport. She replied, “No. How can I have three passports?”

“India is the only country that doesn’t allow dual citizenship,” she added.

Dismissing claims of wealth and foreign assets, she said, “These are all fake allegations. These are all AI generated.”

On Dubai property claims, she said, “They have given a room number in a hotel. What kind of property is that? If I had property, I would buy a house.”

‘TARGETING MY FAMILY, NOT POLITICS’
She said her family was being dragged into politics.

“For the last two years, they have been doing everything to defame me, my daughter, my son. We are nowhere related to politics,” she said.

“I am not a politician. I don’t comment on politics. When fake people come against me, I will defend.”

On tea garden allegations, she pushed back, saying critics should verify facts about salaries and ownership before making claims.

GOGOI ESCALATES WITH OATH CHALLENGE
Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi intensified the attack, challenging Sarma publicly.

“I can say under oath on the Bhagavad Gita that I don’t have property in London. Can he do that?” Gogoi said.

He asked whether Sarma’s family held a Dubai golden visa, owned foreign property, or had business interests abroad, and called for a probe.

CM REJECTS ‘FAKE PASSPORT’, CITES DISCREPANCIES
Sarma said the passport cited in the allegations had already been verified as fake.

“Confirmation has been received from a Dubai government website that the passport is fake,” he said.

He pointed to inconsistencies: “Can ‘India’ be a place of birth? It should be Jorhat or Guwahati. It’s error upon error.”

He also dismissed claims of Rs 52,000 crore assets.

“The entire budget of Assam isn’t even Rs 52,000 crore. That’s basic common sense,” he said.

CAMPAIGN TURNS PERSONAL AHEAD OF APRIL 9 POLLS
The row has intensified just days before Assam votes on April 9, with both sides trading allegations over passports, foreign assets, and personal attacks involving family members.

With police action underway and rhetoric sharpening, the controversy has become a central battleground in the election campaign.

US President Donald Trump has reportedly told his advisers he wanted to avoid a long war in Iran and hoped to end the conflict in the coming weeks.

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, Trump privately indicated he believed the conflict was in its final stages. He also urged officials to stick to the four-to-six-week timeline he had publicly outlined, potentially wrapping up before the mid-May summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Separately, speaking at the NRCC Annual Fundraising Dinner on Thursday, Trump said the US had settled eight wars and was winning another one in the Middle East.

"We settled eight wars. We are winning another one. Nobody has seen anything like what we are doing in the Middle East with Iran. They are negotiating, by the way. They want to make a deal so badly, but they are afraid to say it because they figure they will be killed by their own people. They are also afraid they will be killed by us. There has never been a head of a country who wanted that job less than being the head of Iran," he said.

Meanwhile, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump preferred peace and had temporarily postponed planned strikes after Iran expressed willingness to talk. “President Trump’s preference is always peace. However, following his powerful threat on Saturday evening, it was made clear that Iran wanted to talk,” she said.

Leavitt added that the US has been engaged in productive conversations over the last three days, which led Trump to instruct the department of war to postpone planned strikes on Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure.

She warned, “Let me be clear, Iran should not miscalculate again. Their last miscalculation cost them their senior leadership, their navy, their air force, and their air defence system. President Trump does not bluff, and he is prepared to unleash hell if they refuse to accept the reality that they have been defeated.”

Meanwhile, Iran responded that any end to the conflict would happen only on its own terms. Tehran emphasised that it would stop hostilities “when it decides to do so and when its own conditions are met,” and vowed to continue defending itself and inflict “heavy blows” on the enemy until its demands are satisfied.

US President Donald Trump says he wants Iran war to end within weeks: Report

CAG report flags lapses in quality control of Delhi’s liquor supply – ‘compliance reports from in-house labs

The CAG report on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government's excise policy, tabled in the Delhi assembly on Tuesday, flagged, among other discrepancies, that the national capital's liquor wholesalers failed to submit mandatory quality tests verifying compliance with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) norms.

According to the report tabled in the Delhi assembly by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday, reports on water quality, harmful ingredients, heavy metals, and methyl alcohol were also not submitted for various brands.

The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report, ‘Performance Audit on Regulation and Supply of Liquor in Delhi, ' has flagged 'irregularities' that point towards deficient cross-checks of the test reports. It also highlights cases of unreliable test certificates being submitted and accepted by the Delhi government's excise department.

Test reports for quality compliance were from unaccredited laboratories. Licences were issued to applicants of wholesale licensees (L1 & L1F) despite failure to submit test reports, fully compliant with the parameters laid down as per BIS norms,” it reads.

The CAG report on the AAP government's 2021-22 excise policy also pointed out that in 51 per cent of foreign liquor test cases, reports were either older than one year, missing, or had no date.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government plans to table at least 14 such reports pertaining to the functioning of the AAP government in the assembly in the coming days.

Out of a total of 385 test reports required to be submitted, 196 (50.91 per cent) test reports furnished were older than one year/or no test report was provided/date not mentioned. Thus, no quality claim can be made about the liquor actually supplied, as the reports were from entirely different, older batches,” the CAG report says on page number 52, flagging what it calls ‘violation of quality norms.

The report emphasises that ensuring that the liquor supplied in Delhi conforms to prescribed quality standards is the responsibility of the excise department. It also says that the rules make it mandatory for the wholesalers to submit various test reports at the time of issue of licenses.

Audit observed a number of instances where test reports were not compliant with BIS Specifications and the Excise Department issued licenses despite major shortcomings. The CAG report highlights alarming quality control failures in the AAP government's excise policy

CAG report flags lapses in quality control of Delhi’s liquor supply

Delhi Assembly: 12 AAP MLAs marshaled out, suspended for day over protests

AAP MLAs launched a protest in the Delhi Assembly while lieutenant governor VK Saxena was addressing the House

New Delhi: Twelve Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs, including leader of opposition Atishi and senior leader Gopal Rai, were marshaled out and suspended for the day as they launched a protest in the Delhi Assembly while lieutenant governor (LG) VK Saxena was addressing the House on Tuesday morning. The remaining AAP MLAs staged a walkout.

Speaker Vijender Gupta ordered the marshals to escort the protesting MLAs out of the House as they raised slogans against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government alleging that the pictures of national icons BR Ambedkar and Bhagat Singh were removed from the office of chief minister. AAP alleged that the BJP government is “anti-Dalit.

Chief minister Rekha Gupta refuted the claims of the AAP leaders saying that the pictures of the national icons were still present in the CM’s office chamber. BJP Delhi president Virendra Sachdeva said the AAP leaders were “spreading lies.

CM Rekha Gupta on Monday said it was the tactics of the AAP to hide their corruption behind Ambedkar and Bhagat Singh. “This are their tactics to hide their corruption and wrongdoings behind Babasahab Ambedkar and Shaheed Bhagat Singh. You are inside this chamber, should the pictures of the head of the government not be put up? Should the photo of the President of the country not be put up? Should the photo of Father of the Nation Gandhi ji not be put up? Bhagat Singh and Babasaheb are respectable personalities of the country, revered, and our guide. So, this room is of the CM of Delhi and as the head of the Delhi government, I have given them the space. It is not my work to answer their remarks, I am answerable to the people and will answer for them,” she told media persons in her office in Delhi Assembly after the row broke out.
