Sensex, Nifty see worst day in weeks: Why was market down today?

Stock market today: The Indian stock market saw a sharp selloff on Thursday, February 19, as investors booked profits across sectors after recent gains. The 30-pack Sensex ended the session 1,236 points, or 1.48%, lower at 82,498.14, while its 50-stock counterpart, the Nifty 50, settled the day at 25,454.35, suffering a loss of 365 points, or 1.41%. The Bank Nifty index crashed 811 points and closed at 60,739.

The broad-based selloff also impacted second-rung mid- and small-cap indices, as the BSE 150 MidCap Index crashed 1.54% and the BSE 250 SmallCap Index declined 1.16%. Investors lost about ₹7 lakh crore as the overall market capitalisation of BSE-listed firms dropped to nearly ₹465 lakh crore during the day from ₹472 lakh crore in the previous session.

Speaking on the outlook of the Indian stock market today, Ponmudi R, CEO at Enrich Money, said, “The sell-off was broad-based across banking, auto, FMCG, metals, and aviation stocks, reflecting a clear risk-off sentiment driven by escalating US–Iran tensions, a hawkish US Fed outlook, a spike in India VIX to 13.46 (up over 10%), and sustained FII pressure, with DIIs also turning net sellers in the previous session.”

Expecting a weak opening on Friday, Hariprasad K, SEBI-registered Research Analyst and Founder of Livelong Wealth, said the Gift Nifty today indicates a slightly bearish start for the Nifty 50, extending yesterday’s negative momentum.

US-Iran war

Awaiting President Donald Trump's orders, a massive military buildup, including warships, fighter jets and refuelling aircraft, is hovering in West Asia. The target would be Iran if the ongoing negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear programme fail to produce an agreement.

According to CNN and CBS, the US military is ready to launch strikes against Iran as early as this weekend, but Trump has not yet made a final decision. Russia and Iran, too, have conducted naval exercises in the Sea of Oman to deter any "unilateral action" in the region.

Gold, silver rates today

Following the escalation in US-Iran tensions, gold and silver opened today with an upside gap. The COMEX gold rate today opened higher and touched an intraday high of $5,033.39/oz, logging an intraday gain of nearly 0.50%. Likewise, the COMEX silver rate today opened with an upside gap and touched today's high of $78.655/oz, recording an intraday high of around 0.75% within a few minutes of the Opening Bell.

Speaking on the outlook of the silver, gold rates today, Anuj Gupta, a SEBI-registered market expert, said, “Gold and silver rates are rising due to the escalation in the US-Iran tension. This has increased demand for gold and silver as safe-haven assets.”

Anuj Gupta said that the gold rate today is in $4,850 to $5,200 per ounce range, whereas the silver rate today is in $70 to $85 per ounce range. He said that the gold rate today in India is in the ₹1,50,000 per 10 gm to ₹1,58,000 per 10 gm range, while the silver rate today in India is in the ₹2,30,000 per kg to ₹2,55,000 per kg range.

FII-DII data

Both FIIs and DIIs ended the day as net sellers. The FIIs sold out Indian shares worth ₹881 crore, whereas the DIIs sold out shares worth ₹596 crore.

USD vs INR

The Indian Rupee is expected to trade in a range of 89 to 90 against the US dollar by the end of fiscal year 2027, supported by a softer dollar and a manageable current account deficit (CAD), according to a report by CareEdge Ratings.

The report highlighted that the USD/INR strengthened from recent lows of around 92 to approximately 90.6 following the trade deal with the United States and the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the European Union.

Stock market today

Speaking on the outlook of the Nifty 50 today, Nilesh Jain, VP- Head of Technical and Derivative research at Centrum Finverse, said, “The Nifty 50 index has slipped below its key short-term moving averages and formed a bearish engulfing candlestick, indicating a potential bearish reversal. Immediate resistance is at the 100-DMA near 25,700. On the downside, the crucial support of the 200-DMA is positioned at 25,310, and a decisive break below this could open further downside towards 25,100 levels.”

On the outlook of the Bank Nifty today, Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst at LKP Securities, said, "The Bank Nifty has formed a bearish engulfing pattern on the daily chart, suggesting a potential reversal or at least a pause following the recent rise. The bullish trend appears to be waning after a large red candle formed on the daily chart. The RSI has entered a bearish crossover and is trending lower, indicating weakening momentum. Overall, the sentiment looks weak. On the lower end, support is seen at 60,500/60000, while on the higher end, resistance is placed at 61,200."

Nifty 50, Sensex today: What to expect from Indian stock market

The Indian stock market benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty 50, are likely to open on a tepid note on Tuesday, tracking weakness in global markets.

The trends on Gift Nifty also indicate a muted start for the Indian benchmark index. The Gift Nifty was trading around 22,595.00 level, a discount of nearly 17 points from the Nifty futures’ previous close.

On Monday, the domestic equity market ended sharply lower, with the benchmark Nifty 50 slipping below the 22,600 level.

Here’s what to expect from Sensex, Nifty 50, and Bank Nifty today:

Sensex Prediction

Sensex ended lower by 857 points on Monday, forming a bearish candle on daily charts and correction continuation formation on intraday charts, indicating further weakness from current levels.

We believe that while the current market texture is weak, but it is also oversold; therefore, a quick pullback rally is a strong possibility. For traders, the level of 74,900 will act as a trend decider. As long as Sensex is trading below the same, weak sentiment is likely to continue. Below which it could slip till 74,000 - 73,800,” said Shrikant Chouhan, Head-Equity Research, Kotak Securities.

Conversely, according to him, if Sensex rises above 74,900, it could bounce back up to 75,200 - 75.500.

Nifty OI Data

Nifty derivatives data continues to reflect a bearish undertone, with call writers maintaining dominance over put sellers, indicating a cautious stance.

“A significant build-up in open interest at the 23,000-strike call (1.44 crore contracts) establishes a robust resistance zone, while substantial put writing at the 22,500 strike (94.94 lakh contracts) highlights strong support at lower levels. The 22,700 – 23,000 zone remains under heavy call writing pressure, while unwinding at lower put strikes suggests a shift toward deeper support levels, reinforcing market fragility,” said Dhupesh Dhameja, Derivatives Analyst, SAMCO Securities.

The Put-Call Ratio (PCR) declined to 0.67 from 0.73, reflecting sellers’ complete control despite intermittent buying attempts. Meanwhile, the ‘Max Pain’ level at 22,900 implies that while volatility persists, buyers may step in to cushion declines, offering short-term stability, he added.

Nifty 50 Prediction

Nifty 50 witnessed a downside breakout of the range on February 24 and closed the day lower by 242 points.

“A reasonable negative candle was formed on the daily chart with gap down opening and with minor upper shadow. Technically, this market action signals a downside breakout of the support as well as the short-term range movement at 22,700 levels. This is not a good sign,” said Nagaraj Shetti, Senior Technical Research Analyst at HDFC Securities.

He believes the underlying trend of Nifty 50 continues to be negative and there is a possibility of more weakness down to the next support of 22,400 levels (20-month EMA) in the short term. Immediate resistance is placed at 22,750 levels.

Om Mehra, Technical Analyst, SAMCO Securities, noted that the Nifty 50 continued its weak trajectory, and the prevailing trend of lower highs and lower lows on both the daily and weekly timeframes highlights the bearish outlook.

Nifty 50 breached its previous swing low of 22,725.45. Additionally, the widening distance between the 9-EMA (Exponential Moving Average) and 20-EMA indicates an intensifying downtrend, suggesting weakness may persist in the near term unless Nifty 50 reclaims 22,925.

The support levels are 22,350 and 22,300,” said Mehra.

According to the current outlook, bottom fishing should be avoided, as any pullback could present an opportunity to sell on the rise, he added.

VLA Ambala, Co-Founder of Stock Market Today, said that the Nifty 50 formed a high wave doji candlestick pattern with RSI readings of 29 on the daily, 37 on the weekly, and 55 on the monthly chart, indicating that the market can see further dips.

“Amid the prevailing challenges and market developments, Nifty 50 might hover for support between 22,350 and 22,200 and face resistance near 22,630 and 22,800 in today’s market session,” Ambala said.

Bank Nifty Prediction

Bank Nifty index declined by 0.67%, or 329.25 points, to close at 48,651.95 on Monday, forming a Dragonfly Doji pattern on the daily chart, with the session’s highs and lows set to dictate the trend for the week.

“Bank Nifty continues to follow the trajectory of lower highs and lower lows. The index filled the downside gap created on January 28, 2025. The daily RSI remains below the 40 level, indicating sustained weakness. The Nifty Private Bank and Nifty PSU Bank indices also closed in the red, reflecting waning breadth within the banking space and signalling broader sectoral weakness,” said Om Mehra.

According to him, the Bank Nifty support is placed at the previous swing low of 47,844, while the resistance stands at 49,150. However, a decisive move above 49,600 would be essential to revive bullish sentiment. Until then, the overall outlook remains subdued, he added.

According to analysts, the Indian markets opened with a negative bias and the weak cues from the US have not helped. Wall Street indices closed sharply lower on Friday, amid tariff concerns and fears of a slowdown in the US economy.

Continued FII Selling

Foreign investors have pulled out over Rs 23,710 crore from the Indian equity markets so far in February, pushing total outflows past Rs 1 trillion in 2025 amid rising global trade tensions. They pulled out Rs 78,027 crore in January. With these, the total outflow by FPIs has reached Rs 1,01,737 crore in 2025 so far, data with the depositories showed.

Concerns around continued selling of Indian equities by foreign institutional investors is weighing on market sentiment.

Dr V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Financial Services, says: "The market is facing headwinds from relentless FII selling and global uncertainties relating to Trump tariffs".

On Friday, the lower close on Wall Street, with the Dow Jones falling 1.69 per cent, the S&P 500 dropping 1.71 per cent and the Nasdaq tanking 2.2 per cent, amid concerns of a slowing US economy, also weighed on the markets.

US consumer sentiment fell more than expected in February, hitting a 15-month low of 64.7. Further, inflation expectations surged as households expressed concern that Trump's proposed broad and steep tariffs could undermine their purchasing power.

Further, S&P Global data on Friday showed US business activity dropped to a 17-month low in February. Data showed the S&P Global's flash US Composite PMI Output index fell to 50.4 in February, from a reading of 52.7 in January.

US President Donald Trump's treat to impose tariffs on sectors and countries have continued to rile global markets, including India.

Geopolitical concerns Another reason markets were down on Monday was due to concerns surrounding the resolution of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Russia on Sunday hit Ukraine with its largest single drone attack since the start of the full-scale invasion, which was launched on 24 February 2022.

Why the Indian stock market fell today? Key reasons

Stock market today: Trade setup for Nifty 50 to Q3 results today; 5 stocks to buy or sell

The Benchmark Nifty 50 index and the S&P Sensex ended another volatile session on a negative note, down 0.12 % and 0.16%, respectively, at 23,045.25 and 76,171.08, respectively, on Wednesday. The Bank nifty saw some respite ending 0.15% higher at 49,479.45, while metals were among other sectoral gainers. However, other sectors led by Realty Auto mostly ended in the red. Broader markets, too, ended lower as mid and small-caps corrected up to 0.7%

Trade Setup for Thursday

As long as the Nifty is trading above 22950, the pullback formation is likely to continue, and it could bounce back to the 23200-23250 range, said Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, Kotak Securities. Conversely, if it falls below 22950, selling pressure is likely to accelerate, and the Nifty could retest the 22800 level.

For Bank Nifty 48,734 will serve as support, while the high at 49,702 will act as an immediate hurdle, as per Hrishikesh Yedve, AVP Technical and Derivatives Research at Asit C. Mehta Investment Interrmediates.

The Benchmark Nifty 50 index and the S&P Sensex ended another volatile session

Stock market today Live News

Why did Sensex and Nifty close in the red for the 4th consecutive session today? 5 points

Sensex closed nearly 550 points lower while Nifty ended the day close to 0.80% lower from its previous close, marking the fourth consecutive day of decline

Benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty closed in the red today, marking the fourth consecutive session of decline. While Sensex closed nearly 550 points or 0.70% lower at 77,311.80, Nifty ended over 178 points or 0.76% lower at 23,381.60.

What led to the indices' decline?

Trump tariff concerns: US President Donald Trump announced plans to impose 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports. This not only escalated trade tensions, which further increased skepticism among traders on global commodity prices. He also hinted that US may impose reciprocal tariffs on countries that tax US imports, following his earlier order to impose similar taxes on China, Mexico and Canada. He'd imposed temporary pause on the taxes imposed on China and Mexico.

Weak rupee: The Indian rupee also depreciated 45 paise to a record low of 87.85 against the US dollar, days after it had crossed the 87 mark against the greenback for the first time ever. This was primarily because the dollar strengthened, rising to 108 on the dollar index, over Trump's tariff announcement.

Q3 earnings: Corporate earnings reported for the October-December 2024 quarter by multiple Indian companies have been unsuccessful in lifting market sentiments, with companies like ITC, Swiggy and NHPC reporting a decline in net profit.

Metal stocks drag indices: Major metal stocks were among the worst performers. This was a likely result of US President Trump's tariff announcement, following which the Nifty Metal index dipped 2.94%.

Rising bond yields: Yields on 10-year India Government Bonds rose 2% to 6.83% on Monday, reflecting risk averse nature of investors as they're moving towards safer investment options, like bonds, instead of equities.

How did markets perform?

Power Grid Corporation of India, Tata Steel, Zomato, Titan, Bajaj Finance, ONGC, Bajaj Finance, Adani Enterprises and NTPC were among the top losers on both Sensex and Nifty, falling up to 4.5% at close. Meanwhile, even the day's top gainers like Kotak Mahindra Bank were able to rise only as much as 1.74%.

192 Sensex stocks hit their 52-week lows as compared to only 114 stocks that hit their 52-week highs. Meanwhile, a staggering 127 Nifty stocks hit the lower limits while only 24 Nifty stocks hit 52-week highs.
