Mumbai Rain: As heavy rain continues to lash Mumbai, the city is grappling with widespread disruption, with schools closed, flights affected, severe waterlogging reported across several areas, and multiple rain-related deaths. Fatal incidents, including a chawl collapse and electrocution, have added to the mounting toll as authorities remain on high alert. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued Orange and Red alerts for parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, warning of more heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in the coming days.

What All Happened Amid Mumbai Rains.

Chawl Collapse in Mankhurd

On Sunday evening (July 5), a portion of a chawl in the Mankhurd area collapsed, claiming at least six lives. The incident occurred around 8:30 PM, with reports indicating that two to three huts within a ground-plus-three-storey structure fell, trapping residents beneath the debris.

The Mumbai Fire Brigade classified the situation as a Level-1 emergency and initiated a multi-agency rescue operation involving the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

Five of the deceased, including four women and one man, were pronounced dead at Shatabdi Hospital, while one man died at Rajawadi Hospital. Local officials confirmed that a search continues for individuals feared trapped under the rubble.

Deaths Due to Tree Falls Amid Rain

In addition to the chawl collapse, three individuals lost their lives due to tree falls caused by the heavy rain. In one incident, a young man was killed when a tree fell on a shop in Kurla West, while an 18-year-old motorcyclist died after a tree branch struck him in Goregaon East.

Deaths Due to Electrocution

At least six rain-related electrocution deaths have been reported across the Mumbai region within a week, highlighting the growing danger posed by waterlogged roads and exposed electrical wires during the ongoing monsoon. The victims include a 17-year-old girl in Mumbra, a 42-year-old woman in Dombivli, and a college student in Nalasopara, among others. Several incidents occurred after victims came into contact with live wires or electrified objects lying in rainwater.

Flight Operations Disrupted

Flight operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) were also severely affected, with runway operations temporarily suspended for nearly an hour on Sunday due to adverse weather conditions.

The airport reported that strong winds and reduced visibility led to significant delays, with approximately 90% of departing flights experiencing an average delay of 75 minutes. Some flights were diverted to nearby airports as safety protocols were enforced to protect passengers and crew.

Mumbai Schools Closed

As Mumbai continues to battle torrential rain, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced that all government and private schools in Mumbai would remain closed on Monday (July 6) to ensure the safety of students and teachers.

Similarly, in Pune, Thane, and Navi Mumbai also, the authorities have announced the closure of schools, prioritising student safety amid the Mumbai rain alert.

The BMC urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and stay vigilant, particularly in low-lying areas prone to flooding.

Weather Forecast for Today

The IMD forecasts continued heavy rainfall across Mumbai and surrounding regions, with intermittent showers expected over the next few days. The maximum temperature today is likely to go up to 27 degrees while the minimum will fall to 22 degrees Celsius.

The city has been put on "orange", "yellow" and "red" alert, with the local officials advising citizens to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary and to adhere to safety advisories issued by the authorities.
